City clusters in China: air and surface water pollution

چکیده
growth over the past two decades, accompanied by the development of large-scale industries and services. In the course of this expansion, medium-sized cities and small towns have sprung up around the larger cities, forming city clusters, often with similar or interdependent economies. The development of city clusters in China is somewhat similar to the formation of the megalopolis in the United States, as described by Gottmann (1961). However, there are some differences in terms of the number of cities in an area, their infrastructure, and the services they provide to the region, as compared to the US. City clusters in China tend to be much more concentrated and densely populated, with little room for natural areas; for example, the distance between cities is often less than 10 km in the Pearl River delta. In the city of Guangzhou, spacing between residential buildings is so restricted that they are often referred to as “handshaking” buildings. Also, there is no clear, functional division of infrastructures among the cities, due to a lack of coordination between city planners. Cities within a cluster often compete for avail353

Environmental Consequences of Rapid Urbanization in Zhejiang Province, East China
Since reforms carried out in the late 1970s, China has experienced unprecedented rates of urban growth. Remote sensing data and surface observational data are used to investigate the urbanization process and related environmental consequences, focusing on extreme heat events and air pollution, in Zhejiang Province (ZJP, East China). Examination of satellite-measured nighttime light data indicat...
متن کاملImpact of the 2015 El Nino event on winter air quality in China
During the winter of 2015, there was a strong El Nino (ENSO) event, resulting in significant anomalies for meteorological conditions in China. Analysis shows that the meteorological conditions in December 2015 (compared to December 2014) had several important anomalies, including the following: (1) the surface southeasterly winds were significantly enhanced in the North China Plain (NCP); (2) t...
متن کاملLocational Determinants of Emissions from Pollution-Intensive Firms in Urban Areas
Industrial pollution has remained as one of the most daunting challenges for many regions around the world. Characterizing the determinants of industrial pollution should provide important management implications. Unfortunately, due to the absence of high-quality data, rather few studies have systematically examined the locational determinants using a geographical approach. This paper aimed to ...

The research used the satellite image (Landsat 7 ETM ) within the thermal infrared sixth band (TIR6) and geographic information system (GIS) to determine the air pollution and its relationship with the land cover (LC) and land use (LU) of Baghdad city. Concentration of total suspended particles (TSP), lead (Pb), carbon oxides (CO, CO2), and sulphur dioxide (SO2) were obtained from 22 ground mea...
متن کاملAcceptable Risk Analysis for Abrupt Environmental Pollution Accidents in Zhangjiakou City, China
Abrupt environmental pollution accidents cause considerable damage worldwide to the ecological environment, human health, and property. The concept of acceptable risk aims to answer whether or not a given environmental pollution risk exceeds a societally determined criterion. This paper presents a case study on acceptable environmental pollution risk conducted through a questionnaire survey car...
